Two Journalists Allege Assault at Saket Police Station; Delhi Police Refute Claims
Two independent women journalists on Thursday alleged that they were beaten by Delhi Police personnel inside south Delhi's Saket police station after being detained, allegations that police authorities have dismissed as completely false and misleading.
According to video statements circulating on social media, the journalists said they had travelled to South Delhi to cover an event and intended to question Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. One of the journalists alleged that police teams detained them, brought them to the Saket police station, and moved them into a room where they were assaulted. She further alleged that personnel questioned them about which community they belonged to before beating them again, leaving her with injuries to her arm and leg, while her colleague sustained a leg injury.
In videos shared online, both journalists could be seen displaying visible injury marks on different parts of their bodies. The reporters said they were proceeding to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical examination to have their injuries formally documented through Medico-Legal Cases (MLCs). The allegations could not be independently verified.
Delhi Police refuted the claims, stating that the information being circulated was misleading. According to the police, the two women had obstructed a designated VVIP route by parking their scooter near the venue. The force maintained that despite repeated requests and instructions to remove the two-wheeler and clear the route, the women refused to comply, leading officers to take them to the local police station for further enquiry under security and safety protocols.
A statement issued from the official handle of Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal rejected allegations that the journalists were targeted for questioning the Chief Minister, calling the claims totally false, misleading, and baseless. The DCP advised citizens and social media users to refrain from circulating unverified information.
The incident also drew political reactions, with Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj posting on X to criticise the BJP-led Delhi government and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over the alleged assault on the reporters.
