Delhi and Central Government Offices to Close on September 11 for BRICS Summit
Central government offices across Delhi and New Delhi, alongside Delhi government offices, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings, will remain closed on September 11 in view of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit being hosted at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital.
The Delhi government declared the closure for September 11, which falls on a Friday, through a formal notification issued by its general administration department on Thursday. With September 12 and 13 falling on Saturday and Sunday, the order effectively creates a three-day operational shutdown for administrative offices in the capital to facilitate the smooth handling of the international gathering.
According to an official memorandum released by the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the central government closure was decided after considering the immense scale of the summit, the extensive logistical arrangements required, and the need to minimise inconvenience to the general public. The ministry directed that the closure decision be communicated immediately to all concerned departments across the administration.
The BRICS Business Forum and the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit are scheduled to take place from September 11 to 13 at Bharat Mandapam. The high-profile summit is expected to bring together leaders from around 30 BRICS member and partner nations, alongside heads of international organisations and business delegates from member countries, including India.
In preparation for the influx of global delegations, local authorities and Delhi Police have stepped up citywide security and traffic measures. Delhi Police has intensified security cordons around 10 designated hotels hosting visiting dignitaries and delegates, while earmarking 22 traffic diversion points across the city to manage convoy movements and ease public transit.
India assumed its fourth BRICS Chairship on January 1, 2026, a milestone year marking two decades since the establishment of the BRICS grouping. Guiding this year's chairship is the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," aligning with a focus on people-centric initiatives.
Leading up to the main summit at Bharat Mandapam, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements have been conducted across over 25 Indian cities. The forthcoming discussions among attending world leaders will center on strengthening intra-BRICS cooperation across political, economic, financial, and cultural pillars, as well as exchanging perspectives on pressing regional and global issues.
