Two children drown in waterlogged areas of Samaypur Badli and Ghaziabad

A seven-year-old boy in Sanjay Colony, Samaypur Badli, and a three-year-old girl in Sarvodaya Nagar, Ghaziabad, drowned in accumulated rainwater on Thursday after heavy showers lashed the region.

In Delhi, seven-year-old Rehan, a Class 3 student, drowned in a waterlogged vacant plot in Sanjay Colony. According to his mother, Rehan went out in the morning to attend nature's call with his five-year-old brother. While his younger brother returned, Rehan did not.

The family began a search and discovered Rehan’s bottle on the stone boundary of the flooded plot. His family members searched the water and found him inside a pit in the plot. Rehan was rushed to Burari Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS.

Phool Kumar, a local resident, said that rainwater collects in the vacant plot every year without any corrective action from authorities, adding that such places should be filled or fenced.

In Ghaziabad, three-year-old Manvi drowned in rainwater outside her home in Sarvodaya Nagar around 12:00 PM. Police said the toddler followed her father when he left the house. After realizing she was missing, the family searched and found her in the water outside their home.

Manvi's uncle, Shobhit Kumar, said rainwater had filled their house from the night before. While her mother, Khusboo, was cleaning the room as the water receded, Manvi walked outside into the lane, where knee-deep water had accumulated. She was taken to two hospitals but was declared brought dead.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali Ghaziabad) Upasna Pandey said two to three feet of water had accumulated in Sarvodaya Nagar after the heavy rainfall. She confirmed the girl's body was sent for a postmortem examination.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Hindon recorded 28.5 mm of rainfall and Kamla Nehru Nagar recorded 31.5 mm in Ghaziabad on Thursday.
