NH-48 cave-in near Narsinghpur in Gurgaon triggers 10-kilometre traffic snarls

On Wednesday, a portion of the Delhi-Jaipur carriageway on National Highway 48 (NH-48) caved in near Narsinghpur in Gurgaon, following heavy monsoon rainfall. The major road collapse forced the immediate closure of two lanes on the highway and triggered massive traffic snarls that stretched between eight and ten kilometres, crippling local and interstate transit.
The cave-in occurred at a location where pipe culvert pushing work was underway. The sudden sinking of the road surface exposed severe infrastructure vulnerabilities in Gurgaon, disrupting one of the region's busiest transit corridors that connects Delhi and Jaipur. The collapse on this section of the highway brought traffic to a standstill.
To manage the mounting gridlock, authorities diverted traffic through alternative routes, including the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and the Dwarka Expressway. The Delhi Police also issued an official travel advisory, urging commuters to avoid the affected stretch of NH-48 entirely and to prepare for significantly longer travel times due to the ongoing disruptions.
The infrastructure failure was precipitated by an intense downpour, with Gurgaon recording approximately 82 mm of rainfall on Wednesday. The heavy rain caused widespread disruption across the city, resulting in extensive waterlogging on multiple streets.
In addition to the major cave-in near Narsinghpur, the heavy rainfall led to other road cave-ins and severe congestion across several key arterial roads and major intersections throughout Gurgaon. The combination of waterlogged roads and compromised infrastructure left commuters stranded and struggling to navigate the city's primary transit routes.
The incident in Gurgaon was part of a larger wave of rain-related emergencies that unfolded on Wednesday. Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter large parts of the country, triggering landslides, building collapses, road cave-ins, flash floods, and widespread disruption to road and rail transport across multiple states.
