Meharchand Market in Central Delhi transforms into luxury hub amid constant construction

Meharchand Market in Central Delhi is undergoing a rapid, upscale transformation into a premium commercial hub, marked by a sharp contrast of continuous construction clutter and luxury consumer experiences. On a Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 PM during the monsoon season, the local market presented a scene of ongoing gentrification as high-end international brands and cafes continued to open alongside active renovation projects.
The physical landscape of the market remains dominated by construction. Sweating laborers worked over long metal sariyas lying on the ground, while mounds of gravel, yellow cement sacks, and stacks of bricks spilled onto the footpaths, occupying space meant for pedestrians. A bench sat marooned among bricks and rubble, a sight that appeared to surprise no passersby. Blue tin sheets and scaffolding concealed several buildings, reflecting a state of constant renovation that has characterized the market over recent years.
Despite the construction clutter, Meharchand Market is increasingly catering to a wealthy clientele. High-end designer boutiques and stylish cafes have established a strong presence, with customers visible through glass walls dining on shepherd's pie and Korean salt bread. The market recently welcomed the first Indian outlet of the English brand Ben's Cookies. Other recent additions include a three-floor bookstore specializing in coffee table volumes and a shop preparing to sell luxury products for pets.
This wave of gentrification has drawn comparisons to the nearby Khan Market, with the area attracting fashionable shoppers dressed in expensive, summer-friendly linen. However, elements of the older, sleepy neighborhood bazar still survive. Amidst the upscale transformation, the non-AC Super Tailor Wonder remained open, where a man in a baniyan quietly cooled himself with a hand fan. Nearby, a roadside tea stall beneath a tree continued to operate with its stove perched on a cracked platform beside biscuit jars.
The co-existence of these modest businesses alongside premium landmarks and persistent construction dust has come to define the unique, eclectic character of the evolving market.
