Meghna Ghai Puri Urges Cinema Industry To Embrace Inclusivity

Filmmaker and industry leader Meghna Ghai Puri has called on the cinema industry to actively champion and embrace inclusivity, describing it as an essential element for the future of filmmaking. Speaking exclusively at the Kashish Pride Film Festival, Puri highlighted the evolving role of films in society and the growing global conversations surrounding diversity and representation.
Puri, who is also an educator, emphasized that cinema remains one of the most powerful and influential mediums for reflecting social realities and fostering understanding among diverse audiences. She argued that true inclusivity is not just a box-ticking exercise, but a vital opportunity to enrich narratives.
"Cinema has always been one of society's most powerful mirrors," Puri said. "Its true strength lies in its ability to reflect diverse experiences, challenge perspectives, and foster inclusivity across communities."
She added that as the creative arts continue to evolve, inclusivity must remain at the heart of storytelling. Rather than viewing representation as an obligation, Puri urged filmmakers to see it as a way to create richer, more authentic stories that resonate with modern audiences who are increasingly seeking genuine narratives.
According to Puri, Indian cinema reaches its fullest potential when it embraces a broad spectrum of voices, identities, and lived experiences. She stressed the importance of ensuring this representation exists both on-screen and behind the scenes, noting that diverse storytelling broadens perspectives and strengthens the overall cultural fabric of cinema.
During her address, Puri also praised platforms like the Kashish Pride Film Festival for actively showcasing underrepresented stories and creating spaces for marginalized voices that are often left out of mainstream discourse.
"Platforms like KASHISH play a vital role in creating space for these stories, sparking meaningful conversations, and reminding us that representation matters," Puri said.
