MCD approves ₹26 crore to finish Jangpura and New Friends Colony parking lots

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently approved an additional ₹26 crore to complete two long-delayed multilevel parking projects in Jangpura and New Friends Colony. Originally conceived in 2010, the projects have faced a 16-year delay due to legal disputes, technical challenges, and contractor abandonment, but are now slated for completion within the next year.
The fresh funding of ₹26 crore has revised the total budget for the two facilities to ₹130 crore, up from the initial estimate of ₹104 crore. Civic officials stated that the new allocation will resolve the remaining hurdles, allowing the pending works to finally be wrapped up over the next 12 months.
In Jangpura, the underground parking facility near Block A and the extension area was designed as a three-storey structure with a capacity for 308 vehicles. Construction began on January 29, 2010, as part of infrastructure upgrades for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. However, the project came to a standstill when the contractor fled, leaving the site incomplete.
Following the contractor's departure, the MCD blacklisted the company, forfeited its security deposits, and pursued legal action. While the structural shell of the Jangpura facility is complete, pending works such as electrical installations, air circulation systems, and other ancillary infrastructure must still be finished. Despite a partial inauguration in March 2017, the facility's gates have remained locked, forcing residents to park on adjacent roads.
Meanwhile, the underground parking facility at Sarai Julaina in New Friends Colony has faced its own set of challenges. While two basement floors of the 604-vehicle capacity facility are currently functional, the third basement remains waterlogged due to persistent groundwater seepage. This level requires a complete structural overhaul and waterproofing.
The original completion deadline for both projects was 2012. Legal disputes and prolonged delays in approving cost escalations pushed the timeline back significantly.
