Man Arrested After Cab Driver Dies in Najafgarh Chase and Assault

The Dwarka district police on Sunday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly abducting and assaulting a cab driver who died after a car chase and crash in the New Roshanpura area of Najafgarh. The arrest was announced by the police on Tuesday.

The suspect, identified as Praveen, a 29-year-old resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, was arrested from Delhi. He has been booked for kidnapping and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Three other suspects, including a private money lender, remain at large.

According to the police, the victim, Mohammad Ujaib, was driving his Maruti Suzuki S-Presso taxi in the early hours of Friday when he was chased by four men in a white Hyundai Aura. The high-speed chase ended when Ujaib's vehicle crashed into an electric pole in New Roshanpura, near Najafgarh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh stated that the investigation established Praveen was among the four men who abducted Ujaib from his vehicle after the crash. Despite sustaining injuries from the collision, Ujaib was dragged out of his car, forced into the suspects' Hyundai Aura, and assaulted before being abandoned by the group. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators are currently focusing on a financial dispute between Ujaib and a private money lender, who is one of the three suspects still evading arrest. Ujaib's family alleged that the money lender had repeatedly threatened the cab driver over an unpaid balance of Rs 8,000. This amount was the remainder of a Rs 50,000 loan that Ujaib had taken a few months ago.

DCP Singh said that investigators are still trying to establish the exact motive behind the abduction and assault, as the remaining three suspects are yet to be arrested. Police said they were able to identify the suspects using CCTV footage from the area and other evidence. Raids are currently underway to arrest the remaining accused.
