JP Nadda Praises ILBS as 44 Graduates Receive Degrees at New Delhi Convocation

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda on Tuesday attended the 10th convocation ceremony of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, where he praised the institution's role in raising liver disease awareness and advancing medical education.

During the convocation, degrees were conferred upon 44 graduates, which included 36 post-doctoral students and eight Ph.D. students across the institute's various super-specialty academic programmes.

Addressing the gathering, Nadda congratulated the graduates and said they were privileged to receive their degrees from a globally recognised and renowned institution. He noted that ILBS, which is the country’s first dedicated liver deemed-to-be university, has earned distinction for excellence in patient care, medical education, research, and innovation.

The Union Minister highlighted the institute’s contributions to public health, particularly regarding fatty liver disease. He stated that through its pioneering clinical services, research, and public outreach, ILBS has significantly enhanced the understanding of fatty liver disease, its risk factors, prevention, and long-term health implications.

Nadda also emphasised that the central government has adopted a comprehensive approach towards strengthening medical education by focusing on both its "hardware" and "software" components.

According to Nadda, the "hardware" comprises world-class infrastructure, medical institutions, and healthcare facilities. Meanwhile, the "software" represents the enabling ecosystem, policy framework, and academic environment that empower students, researchers, and healthcare professionals to excel. He added that the true strength of a nation’s healthcare system lies in building an ecosystem where excellence can flourish, rather than merely creating institutions.

Highlighting the institute's performance, Professor SK Sarin, chancellor of ILBS, shared key achievements from 2025. He reported that during the year, ILBS treated over 160,000 liver patients and managed 10,800 liver emergencies.

Professor Sarin also noted that the institute performed 162 liver transplants during the year, crossing a cumulative milestone of 1,392 successful liver transplants.
