IMD forecasts Sunday thunderstorms and 50 kmph winds for Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph for Delhi-NCR on Sunday.

According to the weather department, the stormy weather in Delhi-NCR will be accompanied by similar conditions in neighboring northern states. Parts of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand are also expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds on Sunday.

The forecast for Delhi-NCR is part of a broader weather warning issued by the IMD, which includes predictions of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and heatwaves across various states. The weather office noted that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely over several other regions, including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Rajasthan, east Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Konkan, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep.

Additionally, the IMD has forecast even stronger thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph over Jharkhand. Extremely heavy rainfall is also anticipated at isolated places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Meanwhile, the IMD reported that the southwest monsoon is continuing its progression across India. The northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Surat, Indore, Mandla, Daltonganj, and Motihari.

Meteorologists expect conditions to remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further into more parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, as well as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar, during the next three to four days.

While Delhi-NCR prepares for wind and rain, severe weather of a different kind is expected in nearby Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has forecast heatwave conditions to persist over west Uttar Pradesh, with severe heatwave conditions likely to continue in isolated parts of east Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

The weather office indicated that widespread rainfall activity is expected to continue across the northeast, the west coast, and several parts of peninsular India through early July.
