IMD Forecasts Rain and Strong Winds in Delhi After Thunderstorms Bring Relief

On Friday, June 12, 2026, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received a temporary break from a recent hot spell as cool winds, light rain, and dark grey clouds swept across the capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow warning for the region, forecasting continued light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
The sudden weather change on Friday morning brought a pleasant breeze as residents stepped out for work and school. According to the weather office, the shift was caused by a chain of intense thunderstorms that formed over Punjab on Thursday evening and moved eastward through Haryana and into Delhi-NCR overnight.
The IMD forecast that skies will remain generally cloudy throughout Friday. The weather office expects a spell of very light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds between 40 and 60 kmph, toward the late morning. A similar spell is predicted to return in the afternoon or evening.
The wet weather is expected to persist, with spells of light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning forecast for June 12 and June 13. From June 14 onward, the skies are expected to remain partly cloudy, with a possibility of thundery development on June 14 and June 16. The weather on June 17 and June 18 is forecast to remain partly cloudy.
Temperatures in the national capital also saw a dip due to the rain. The minimum temperature on June 12 was recorded at 22.8°C. This minimum temperature is expected to gradually rise to between 26°C and 28°C by June 17 and June 18.
The storm system that triggered the change also brought light to moderate rainfall and strong winds across large parts of Punjab and Haryana before reaching Delhi. Wind gusts during the storm reached up to 111 kmph in Sangrur, Punjab.
