IMD forecasts light rain and thunderstorms in Delhi for July 1 and 2

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light showers and thunderstorms for Delhi-NCR on Monday, with weather conditions expected to intensify on Tuesday, July 1, and Wednesday, July 2. The weather agency has issued an alert for the national capital as it transitions from relatively clear skies to active weather systems.

According to the IMD, Delhi is expected to remain partly cloudy over the next five days. Residents will likely experience sunshine during the day, with cloud cover developing later. Temperatures in the capital are projected to remain around 35 to 37 degrees Celsius by Wednesday.

An IMD official confirmed that there is a possibility of very light to light rain in the coming days, with weather conditions intensifying on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The forecast comes as the southwest monsoon gradually moves northward. Currently, satellite imagery from INSAT-3DS shows dense monsoon cloud cover across central India, the Bay of Bengal, northeastern states, and parts of southern India. However, Delhi-NCR, alongside Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, has continued to see relatively clear skies.

Meteorologists attributed the pause in monsoon activity in northwest India to the absence of strong low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal. However, conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar over the next three to four days.

A large tropical system is expected to form over the eastern Indian Ocean and move towards the Bay of Bengal in the coming days. Experts note this system may strengthen monsoon activity and trigger heavier rainfall in early July.

While Delhi expects light showers, neighbouring states are preparing for more severe weather. The IMD has issued warnings for western Rajasthan, where gusty winds of up to 50 kmph, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected until July 2. Uttarakhand is also on alert for thunderstorms with lightning and rain between June 30 and July 2, while parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness rain and thunderstorms despite persisting heatwave-like conditions.
