DMRC Begins Construction On Inderlok-Indraprastha Metro Corridor At Sarai Rohilla

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commenced construction on the 12.377-kilometre-long Inderlok-Indraprastha Metro corridor, starting with diaphragm wall construction at the Sarai Rohilla Metro Station site. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was present for the launch of the physical work on this Phase 4 expansion project.

The new underground corridor, which is being developed as an extension of the Magenta Line (Line-8), is targeted for completion by December 2030. The Union Cabinet approved the project in March 2024, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the corridor in the same month.

The project will feature 10 underground stations. The stations on this route include Indraprastha, Delhi Sachivalaya, IG Stadium, Delhi Gate, New Delhi, Nabi Karim, Jhandewalan Mandir, Ajmal Khan Park, Sarai Rohilla, Daya Basti, and Inderlok.

According to the DMRC, the corridor will provide crucial transit links by offering interchange facilities for seven existing metro lines across five stations. Commuters will be able to transfer to the Green and Red Lines at Inderlok, the Magenta Line at Nabi Karim, the Yellow and Orange (Airport Express) Lines at New Delhi, the Violet Line at Delhi Gate, and the Blue Line at Indraprastha.

Civil construction will be executed through multiple major contract packages. The contract for one of the packages, designated as D2C-06, has already been awarded, while the tendering process for the remaining packages is currently underway at an advanced stage of finalisation.

Once completed, the extension will make the Magenta Line the longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network, stretching approximately 89 kilometres from Botanical Garden to Inderlok. The entire corridor will operate as a driverless metro line using standard gauge tracks and modern 3.2-metre-wide rolling stock in a six-car train configuration.

Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, confirmed that the extended line will operate entirely as a driverless corridor. The line will also feature an Automatic Fare Collection system to support digital and smart payment options.

The corridor is expected to improve local connectivity to key destinations, including the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station, New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Secretariat, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Jhandewalan Mandir, India Gate, Kartavya Path, and the Central Vista area.
