Delhi Traffic Police Issue 48.4 Lakh Challans and Clear Major Bottlenecks

The Delhi Traffic Police intensified traffic management and enforcement across New Delhi during the first half of the year, issuing 48.4 lakh challans and implementing major congestion-relief measures in busy areas including Laxmi Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place, and ISBT Kashmere Gate.

According to data released by the department, the total number of challans issued up to June rose to 48.4 lakh, marking an increase of approximately one lakh from the 47.5 lakh challans issued during the corresponding period in the previous year. Of these, 17.2 lakh challans were generated using automated red light violation detection and speed violation detection systems. Additionally, the police registered 2,187 FIRs specifically for dangerous driving.

Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manish Kumar Agrawal outlined the department's initiatives to improve mobility, road safety, and enforcement. Agrawal stated that the police have developed eight signal-free stretches across Delhi. This was achieved by closing redundant traffic signals, providing U-turn facilities, removing unauthorised median cuts, and rationalising intersections.

The traffic police have also identified another 25 stretches to assess the feasibility of implementing similar signal-free interventions.

The restructuring efforts have already led to improved traffic flow on several key stretches, including the route from Netaji Subhash Place to the Rithala metro station, as well as the Laxmi Nagar-Karkari Mor stretch on Vikas Marg.

To address severe bottlenecks, the Delhi Traffic Police executed targeted congestion-relief measures in coordination with multiple local agencies. These efforts included constructing additional bus bays and pedestrian infrastructure at ISBT Kashmere Gate, as well as diverting Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses through the Khajuri flyover.

Furthermore, authorities relocated existing bus stands at Adhchini village and Ashram Chowk to ease local bottlenecks. Designated pick-up and drop-off zones were also established at the Anand Vihar ISBT to streamline passenger movement and prevent traffic build-ups.
