Delhi to inspect 923 coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar and other hubs within a month

Education Minister Ashish Sood announced on Thursday, June 25, 2026, that the government will launch safety inspections and fire audits of approximately 923 coaching centres across Delhi, specifically targeting major hubs such as Mukherjee Nagar, Rajender Nagar, and Katwaria Sarai. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been designated as the nodal agency for this safety drive. Any facility found violating fire safety or building regulations will be sealed immediately.

The directive follows a high-level meeting chaired by Mr. Sood on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with officials from multiple government agencies. During the meeting, the minister set a strict one-month deadline for authorities to complete the inspections across all coaching hubs in the city. The primary objective is to ensure that coaching classes operate only in locations that strictly comply with official safety guidelines.

The government's action comes in the wake of a tragic fire that engulfed a building in the Aliganj area of Lucknow on June 22, 2026, resulting in 15 deaths. The safety of coaching centres in Delhi has also been under intense scrutiny since a 2024 flooding incident in the basement of a UPSC coaching institute in Old Rajinder Nagar, which killed three students and left many others trapped.

In addition to the immediate inspections, Mr. Sood stated that the government is preparing a comprehensive regulatory framework to govern these institutes. Earlier this month, the minister noted that the framework will address issues such as student safety, fee structures, and infrastructural standards. A committee has already been convened to draft these regulations, which will be based on the recommendations of the Justice Gauba Committee.

The upcoming regulations will address a wide range of issues, including student safety, fee structures, and infrastructural standards. The Justice Gauba Committee's recommendations specifically cover structural safety, quality standards, teacher qualifications, operational norms, and guidelines regarding advertisements published by coaching institutes.
