Delhi PWD Begins Clearing Trees For Rouse Avenue Court And Hospital Expansions

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has started the felling and transplantation of trees to clear space for key infrastructure development projects at the Rouse Avenue Courts complex, Rao Tula Ram Government Hospital in Jaffarpur, and Madipur Hospital. The ongoing operations aim to clear land for major upgrades, including a Rs 550-crore court expansion and two hospital expansion projects.

Across these three development sites, contracted developers have been tasked with relocating a total of 200 trees. The contractors are required to transplant the trees to new locations within a two-kilometre radius of the construction sites. Furthermore, they are bound by a mandate to maintain the transplanted trees for 36 months after relocation to improve and ensure their survival.

The largest environmental clearance exercise is currently underway at the Rouse Avenue Courts complex. At this site, the PWD has initiated the process of felling or transplanting 390 trees to pave the way for the Rs 550-crore court expansion project. According to official tender documents, 213 of these trees will be felled, while the remaining 177 trees will be transplanted.

In addition to the court project, two major healthcare expansion projects are also requiring tree relocation. At the Rao Tula Ram Government Hospital in Jaffarpur, the PWD plans to transplant eight trees to clear space for a proposed 270-bed expansion of the hospital.

The transplantation work at the Jaffarpur hospital includes excavating around the trees, pruning their branches, and lifting and transporting them to their new locations within the specified two-kilometre radius. The contracted developer will be responsible for maintaining these eight trees for 36 months after they are relocated.

Similarly, for the proposed hospital project at Madipur, the PWD has floated a tender for the transplantation and maintenance of 15 trees. As with the Rao Tula Ram Government Hospital project, the contractor at Madipur will be required to transplant the 15 trees within a two-kilometre radius and maintain them for three years to ensure their survival.
