Delhi Population Hits 2.3 Crore as First Phase of Census Concludes

The provisional population of Delhi has reached over 2.3 crore residents, according to data released following the conclusion of the first phase of the Census 2027 exercise on June 14, 2026. The house listing phase, which covered districts across the city including New Delhi, Northeast, and Southwest Delhi, recorded a significant demographic milestone for the metropolitan area.
The initial phase of the census covered nearly 76 lakh houses and around 55 lakh households across Delhi. Enumerators conducted the exercise through 45,863 House Listing Blocks (HLBs), with each block consisting of approximately 180 houses. Officials noted that these population figures are provisional, with the final count to be determined after the second phase of population enumeration scheduled for February 2027.
The census data revealed wide population variations across Delhi's districts. The Northeast district recorded the highest population with more than 28 lakh residents. This was followed by Southwest Delhi with 25 lakh residents, West Delhi with 24,42,346 residents, and Southeast Delhi with 22,70,778 residents.
In contrast, the New Delhi district recorded the lowest population in the city, with about 2 lakh residents. The houselisting exercise in the New Delhi district was conducted from April 16 to May 15, listing around 63,000 households and 2.5 lakh persons.
Household distribution also varied significantly across the city. Southwest Delhi topped the list with 6,25,453 households, followed closely by Northeast Delhi with 6,13,828 households. West Delhi recorded 5,89,210 households, while East Delhi had 5,47,461 households.
Other districts recorded varying numbers, with Southeast Delhi at about 5.4 lakh households, South Delhi at 5.3 lakh, Northwest Delhi at nearly 4.7 lakh, and Outer North Delhi at about 4.4 lakh. North Delhi recorded around 4 lakh households, Central Delhi had nearly 2.4 lakh, Old Delhi recorded around 1.6 lakh, and New Delhi had the fewest at approximately 63,000 households.
In terms of housing infrastructure, Southwest Delhi led with over 8.2 lakh census houses. Northeast Delhi and West Delhi followed, both recording about 8 lakh census houses. New Delhi district had the lowest housing stock, with nearly 1 lakh census houses listed during the exercise.
