Delhi Police Seek Stricter Cab Driver Screening After Mehrauli Girl Murder

Following the alleged abduction, rape, and murder of a 10-year-old girl in South Delhi's Mehrauli area by a cab driver, the Delhi Police are planning to push for stricter screening of cab drivers and improved safety measures for homeless families. The law enforcement agency plans to reach out to district magistrates, the Delhi government, and cab aggregators to address safety concerns of homeless people and to review policies for screening cab drivers.
The police are likely to write to the Delhi government to urge that policies on cab aggregators be made much stricter. This proposed move includes demanding stronger scrutiny and verification for onboarding drivers. The goal of the stricter guidelines is to ensure that individuals with criminal backgrounds or suspicious records are not allowed to register and operate as cabbies. A police officer confirmed that this policy review is currently under consideration.
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities have identified the cab aggregator platform that the accused driver, 29-year-old Basu Kumar Singh, was linked to at the time of the incident. The Delhi Police will formally write to the company seeking details of all passengers ferried by Singh in recent days. This includes seeking information on the passenger who booked his cab after the crime was committed, which investigators hope will help them ascertain his conduct with other passengers.
Additionally, police sources stated that a formal letter will be sent to the South Delhi District Magistrate regarding the homeless families living in the Mehrauli area where the child was abducted. The police will urge the local administration to build shelter homes so that vulnerable people can be shifted to safer spaces.
Through these coordinated efforts, the police hope to prevent similar incidents and secure the safety of vulnerable residents in the area.
