Delhi LG Orders DJB to Repair Pipeline and Restore Water Supply to Sanjay Lake

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to expedite repairs on a damaged pipeline to restore the treated water supply to Sanjay Lake in New Delhi. The intervention is aimed at saving the 52-acre man-made lake and its adjoining 165-acre protected forest area from further ecological degradation.

During a site visit, Sandhu reviewed the restoration and rejuvenation works currently being carried out by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). He was briefed on the comprehensive plans to revive the lake and the surrounding forest. The Lieutenant Governor had previously raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the water body, which has been plagued by a reduced supply of water, silt accumulation, garbage, and sewage inflows.

According to officials, restoring the flow of treated water from the Dallupura sewage treatment plant (STP) is critical for the survival of Sanjay Lake. Sandhu stressed that a regular supply of treated water must be restored at the earliest to maintain adequate water levels, ensuring the lake remains a sustainable, year-round blue-green asset for the city.

Several clean-up and restoration activities are already underway at the site. Officials noted that workers are currently carrying out de-weeding, algae removal, embankment strengthening, and boundary repairs.

The rejuvenation project will be executed in distinct phases. The first phase, which is targeted for completion by August 2026, will focus on channelling stagnant water into the lake. It will also include the installation of bio-swales to improve groundwater recharge, repairs to existing pathways, and the removal of grass from the lake bed.

The second phase of the project is proposed to be completed by May 2027. This phase will involve the expansion of water channelisation works, bio-remediation of the water body, and the installation of aerators and fountains to improve dissolved oxygen levels in the lake.

To further enhance the local biodiversity of the protected forest area, the Lieutenant Governor also directed officials to plant 5,000 native trees. Sandhu stated that restoring Sanjay Lake to its former glory was "non-negotiable."
