Delhi LG Directs DTC to Deploy Armed Female Police Personnel on Buses

On June 5, 2026, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to deploy armed female police personnel on its buses in Delhi. The directive, aimed at enhancing security and ensuring safer travel for women and children using public transport, was issued during a high-level review meeting.

The decision was made during a meeting attended by the Secretary-cum-Commissioner (Transport), the Managing Director of the DTC, and senior Transport department officers. The officials gathered to review existing safety measures for women in the national capital's public transit system.

During the review, LG Sandhu emphasised that public transport must not only be accessible but must also guarantee safe travel for women. He highlighted that security measures should protect female passengers not just during their commute on DTC buses, but also until they reach their doorsteps after de-boarding at bus stands, depots, or stations.

To address last-mile safety, Sandhu instructed transport officials to onboard operators of cabs, three-wheelers, and e-rickshaws. He also acknowledged the successful roll-out of the Saheli Pink Smart Card and stressed the need to make the card usable across all modes of public transport to facilitate seamless travel for women.

To facilitate the deployment of armed female officers on buses, the LG asked the Transport department to coordinate with the Delhi Police. He also directed the department to expand female recruitment across public transport fleets. Currently, the city's transport fleet includes 1,002 women conductors and 77 women drivers.

Additionally, Sandhu instructed the department to focus on electric vehicles to provide safe and reliable local connectivity to remote areas, peripheral pockets, and unserved neighborhoods. He also urged officials to promote women-only carpool facilities by onboarding private aggregators such as Uber, Ola, Bharat Taxi, and Rapido.
