Delhi Heinous Crimes Drop By Eight Percent And Thefts Hit Ten-Year Low

Heinous crimes in Delhi have declined by 8% this year, while motor vehicle thefts and other thefts have hit a 10-year low, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha announced on Wednesday.

Speaking during Police Commissionerate Day in Delhi, Golchha detailed the overall drop in crime statistics across the national capital, attributing the progress to crime prevention strategies and technology-driven policing.

According to the statistics released by the commissioner, crimes against women in Delhi decreased by nearly 17% this year. The police achieved a 98% detection rate in these cases, which Golchha stated is among the highest in the country. Furthermore, nearly 95% of these cases resulted in chargesheets being filed within the prescribed statutory time limit.

The Delhi Police also focused on swift legal action in sensitive cases. During the current year, the police filed chargesheets within two weeks in 35 Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases and 172 street crime cases.

The decline in theft cases was particularly notable. Motor vehicle thefts decreased by 21% compared to last year, while other thefts dropped by 15%. Golchha noted that these are the lowest figures recorded in the past 10 years, despite these categories involving online registration where police do not have direct control over the filing process.

In addition to thefts, offences registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) fell by 12% this year. Police Control Room (PCR) calls regarding robbery and snatching also saw a substantial decline, which the commissioner linked to improved police visibility and effective crime-control strategies.

Addressing organized crime, Golchha emphasized that the Delhi Police have shifted focus toward dismantling criminal ecosystems. The force is actively targeting not only individual criminals but also the broader networks and infrastructure that provide them with protection and logistical support.
