Delhi Government Q1 Tax Revenue Crosses Rs 16,800 Crore

The Delhi government registered tax revenue collections of over ₹16,800 crore in the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, marking an increase from the ₹15,875 crore collected during the corresponding period last year. Official data released on Thursday showed that the growth in revenue brings the government closer to its annual Budget Estimate of ₹74,000 crore for own tax revenue.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) continued to be the largest contributor to Delhi’s tax receipts, reaching ₹10,193 crore by the end of June. This is an increase from the ₹9,973.47 crore collected during the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, and ₹9,098.93 crore in 2024-25.

Value Added Tax (VAT) collections also saw an upward trend, rising to ₹1,960 crore from ₹1,682.49 crore in the same period of 2025-26.

Revenue from state excise experienced a notable increase, reaching ₹1,569.38 crore by the end of June, compared to ₹1,264.80 crore in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. An official explained that this growth was driven by reduced uncertainty among licence holders and suppliers after the government decided to extend the current policy for a full year instead of issuing short-term extensions, alongside a reduction in the number of dry days.

Stamp and registration fees brought in ₹2,286.14 crore, up from ₹2,144.08 crore in the first quarter of 2025-26. However, motor vehicle tax collections experienced a slight dip, falling to ₹796.88 crore from ₹810.69 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Including grants, the total revenue receipts for the Delhi government in the first three months of the 2026-27 fiscal year stood at ₹17,436.38 crore. This represents 21.27% of the total Budget Estimate of ₹81,992.07 crore, compared to 19.87% (₹16,203.76 crore) collected during the same period in 2025-26.

According to an official, the improved tax collections reflect the impact of the government's deregulation measures and sustained efforts to improve the ease of doing business, which have resulted in better compliance and higher revenue collection.
