Delhi Fire Accidents Have Killed Over 800 People Since 2016, Government Data Shows

More than 800 people have lost their lives in fire tragedies across Delhi since 2016, according to official data provided by the Delhi government. The alarming statistics highlight a severe safety crisis in the national capital's most popular built hubs, which have increasingly been described as hazardous fire traps for both local residents and visitors.

The official data reveals a persistent and deadly trend in the city's built environment over the last decade. Out of the total fatalities recorded since 2016, a significant majority of the deaths occurred in recent years. Specifically, 543 people have lost their lives in fire tragedies in Delhi since 2019.

This ongoing safety crisis has shown no signs of slowing down in the current year. In the first half of 2026 alone, 65 deaths in fire accidents have already been reported across the city. This high number of casualties in just a six-month period underscores the immediate danger present in these built hubs.

According to the findings, these beloved hubs, which draw large crowds of residents and visitors daily, are built on structures that act as fire traps. The high death toll of over 800 people since 2016 reflects the severe impact of these fire accidents on the local population.

The Delhi government data highlights the scale of the tragedy, showing that hundreds of families have been affected by these recurring incidents over the nine-year period. The safety of these built hubs remains a critical concern as fire accidents continue to claim lives across the city.
