Delhi Court Defers Verdict In IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case To July 13

A Delhi court at the Karkardooma courts on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, deferred its verdict in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma for the third time in a month. The final judgment, which involves former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and 10 other accused, has been postponed to July 13, 2026. The case stems from the north-east Delhi riots in February 2020, during which Sharma was killed and his body was found in a drain in the Chand Bagh Pulia area.

Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh deferred the highly anticipated ruling, noting that the written judgment is still being prepared. This is the third occasion in the past month that the court has delayed delivering its verdict in the trial.

The prosecution stated that on February 25, 2020, Sharma had returned home from work before stepping out once again. When he did not return, his family launched a search to locate him. The family was later informed of his death, and his body was subsequently recovered from a drain near a mosque in Chand Bagh Pulia.

Following the recovery of the body, an FIR was registered at the Dayalpur police station. The case was initiated after Sharma's father, Ravinder Kumar, filed a formal complaint accusing Hussain and several other individuals of murdering his son.

Years later, on March 24, 2023, the trial court framed charges against the 11 accused. The charges leveled against them include rioting with deadly weapons, promoting enmity between different groups, murder, and criminal conspiracy.

Hussain, the former councillor, additionally faces charges of abetment and making statements conducive to public mischief. The court will now attempt to deliver its final judgment on July 13, 2026, as the preparation of the verdict continues.
