Delhi Approves ₹17.6-Crore Plan for Smarter and Greener Roads

The Delhi government has approved a ₹17.6-crore project to implement a scientific framework for paving, greening, and managing urban roads across Delhi. The Administrative Approval and Expenditure Sanction (AA&ES) cleared the release of the full project cost under a tripartite memorandum of agreement signed on June 8.

The agreement was signed between the Delhi government, the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA). Executed through the Public Works Department (PWD), the partnership lays the foundation for a scientific framework to improve the planning, construction, and maintenance of the capital's road network.

A key component of this initiative is the development of a digital road asset management system. This system will create a comprehensive digital inventory of roads throughout Delhi. It will scientifically assess various parameters, including pavement conditions, traffic loads, structural strength, maintenance requirements, and the expected service life of the roads.

By establishing this digital inventory, authorities plan to scientifically identify which areas require immediate attention. The system is expected to help the Public Works Department and other relevant authorities prioritize repair and maintenance works based on road condition and urgency.

Beyond maintenance, the framework also aims to improve overall road design and environmental sustainability across the capital. A major focus of the project is to mitigate the city's recurring waterlogging problems.

To address waterlogging, the project will involve redesigning road gradients and improving drainage systems. This is intended to ensure better stormwater flow during the monsoon season, preventing the water accumulation that frequently disrupts traffic and daily life in the city.

The ₹17.6-crore funding will cover the entire project cost as cleared by the Administrative Approval and Expenditure Sanction. Through this scientific approach, the collaborating institutions aim to deliver smarter, greener, and more resilient road infrastructure for Delhi.
