Delhi Airport Duty Free Sales Surge Led By Asian and Middle Eastern Routes

Duty-free sales at the Delhi airport have experienced a major surge over the past few years following the COVID-19 pandemic, driven primarily by tourists traveling to Asian, Middle Eastern, and European destinations. According to airport officials, these travelers are spending significantly more at retail outlets than passengers traveling on United States routes.

Airport officials revealed that tourists traveling to Thailand and other Asian countries tend to spend the most at the Delhi airport duty-free stores. This contrasts with travelers heading to the US, who are less likely to make major purchases. One official explained that tourists to the US are mostly people visiting their relatives or students, which accounts for their lower retail spending.

In terms of overall duty-free sales, Singapore, Dubai, and London have established themselves as the top international routes. Another official noted that Southeast Asia has become a rapidly growing leisure market, while European hub routes continue to generate high duty-free spending from passengers. This spending pattern has remained consistent throughout the post-pandemic period.

A spokesperson for GMR Duty Free stated that the sales performance is primarily driven by a mix of high-volume international routes across key global regions, including the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The spokesperson noted that both arrival and departure traffic from major global aviation hubs contribute significantly to the airport's overall retail performance.

To support this growth, GMR Duty Free has focused on offering curated product assortments and various value-added services designed to enhance the customer experience. These services include click-and-collect facilities, pre-order options, and premium concierge assistance. Additionally, the operator has introduced gifting solutions and seamless omnichannel shopping services to make purchasing more convenient for international travelers.
