Artist Bewesh Adhikari paints Sonam Matters graffiti on Delhi flyover wall

On Thursday, artist Bewesh Adhikari painted a massive 'Sonam Matters' graffiti on a flyover wall in Delhi to show support for activist Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike. The action, which occurred on the 19th day of Wangchuk's strike, drew the attention of the Delhi Police and sparked a heated online debate over public art and vandalism.

Adhikari shared a video of the painting process on Instagram, showing himself painting the words 'Sonam Matters' in bold red letters across the flyover wall. During the video, a Delhi Police vehicle pulled up to the spot, and officers were seen interacting with the artist while a few passersby stopped to observe.

The video quickly went viral, prompting a wave of conflicting reactions online. Some social media users praised Adhikari's artwork for bringing attention to Wangchuk's protest. One commenter expressed support, writing, "Love you bro, it's so crazy," while another noted that educated people understand the value of the activist's cause.

However, other users heavily criticized the act, describing it as vandalism of public property. Critics argued that nothing justifies damaging public assets, with one user commenting, "This is wrong, why are you damaging the public property? That's why civic sense is important."

Addressing the controversy, Adhikari clarified online that the flyover wall already contained multiple pieces of graffiti, and he had simply utilized an empty space. He stated his intention was to draw attention to a cause he believes deserves to be heard, while acknowledging that people might disagree with his method. He also announced plans to repaint the wall on the 20th day of the protest.

Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk remains on an indefinite hunger strike, which has raised concerns among doctors and fellow protestors. Wangchuk has reportedly lost over nine kilograms but has refused to end his fast. In a recent social media update, Wangchuk stated that although he is losing muscle mass, his core and heart are functioning well, and he urged supporters to join him in a peaceful march to the Parliament on July 20.
