Former MP Sajjan Kumar Dies at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi

Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was serving life sentences in Tihar Jail in connection with two 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases, died on Thursday at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

Kumar's parole hearing had been listed before the Supreme Court on the same day he passed away.

According to a statement issued by Delhi Prisons, Kumar had been referred from Tihar Jail to Safdarjung Hospital for general OPD consultations and several age-related medical conditions. These ailments included hypertension, cataract, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and Parkinson’s disease. Officials noted that he had previously been undergoing treatment for these health issues at the hospital.

Safdarjung Hospital stated that Kumar was brought to the facility at approximately 11:00 am with altered sensorium. Medical staff immediately admitted him and initiated emergency resuscitation measures. Despite all necessary medical interventions and life-support efforts, doctors were unable to revive him.

The hospital declared Kumar dead at 12:30 pm, noting that he was a known patient of hypertension and Parkinson’s disease with a medical history of multiple previous hospital admissions.

Delhi Armed Police personnel reported the death at around 1:35 pm, recording the time of death as 12:20 pm. Delhi Prisons officials stated that the formal cause of death will be ascertained in due course.

Kumar had been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2018 following his conviction and sentencing to life imprisonment in the riot cases.
