Delhi Plants 50 Lakh Saplings in Annual Green Drive, Targets 70 Lakh

Nearly 50 lakh saplings have been planted across the capital so far against a target of 70 lakh under the annual plantation drive, the Delhi government announced on Thursday, August 20, at the President’s Bodyguard parade ground in the Central Ridge.
The progress was shared during a mass plantation programme held under the Delhi Mega Plantation Drive 2026 and the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. The event was led by Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Malhotra and Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
The plantation effort is being carried out by multiple agencies, including the Forest Department, the Delhi Development Authority, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Speaking at the event, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the initiative goes beyond a standard campaign to serve as a long-term environmental movement. He noted that citizens are stepping forward voluntarily to take on the responsibility of planting, protecting, and nurturing trees.
According to the government, around 1.78 lakh people have registered for the drive on the dedicated campaign portal, with approximately 1.54 lakh citizens actively participating so far.
To ensure survival and long-term care, the planted saplings are being geo-tagged and monitored. The government is also developing a QR-code-based system that will allow citizens to track the growth of the specific trees they plant.
Sirsa added that the goal of the mission is to unite the people of Delhi and encourage them to care for each planted tree with personal responsibility and affection.
