Delhi Doctors Urge Caution as H1N1 Cases Surge Across City

Medical experts in New Delhi have urged residents to take precautions and avoid crowded places when symptomatic amid a surge in H1N1 cases across the city. Doctors highlighted that young children and individuals with underlying health conditions face a heightened risk of complications from the infection.

Dr Dhiren Gupta, a senior paediatrician and co-director of Paediatric Pulmonology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, advised that children showing symptoms such as a cough or cold should not attend school or mix in groups to help curb the spread of the virus within the community.

According to Dr Gupta, individuals with comorbidities—including diabetes, hypertension, chronic lung disease, asthma, or neurological conditions—are at the highest risk. He stressed the collective responsibility to take measures to prevent transmission to vulnerable groups.

Dr Gupta noted that approximately 70 percent of current respiratory cases are H1N1, commonly known as Swine Flu. Compared to the initial outbreak in 2009, the virus is causing increased distress in children under the age of five, while persistent high fever is particularly affecting children under two years old.
