2.5-kg Adrenal Tumour Removed at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi

Surgeons at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi have successfully removed a giant 2.5-kilogram adrenal tumour measuring 24 centimetres from a patient during a complex operation.

The massive tumour had occupied a substantial portion of the patient's abdominal cavity and was found closely surrounding vital organs and major blood vessels. Its enormous size had severely distorted the patient's normal abdominal anatomy, significantly elevating the risks of critical blood loss and accidental injury to neighbouring bodily structures during surgery.

The surgical intervention was led by Dr Ashwin Mallya, a uro-oncologist and robotic surgeon, working alongside Dr Suresh Singhvi, a senior gastrointestinal and liver surgeon. The medical team performed a careful dissection to separate the mass from surrounding vital organs, including the pancreas, spleen, and colon, before completely extracting it.

Operating on large adrenal tumours presents significant surgical difficulties due to their proximity to vital organs and major vascular pathways. To mitigate these hazards, the medical team relied on detailed pre-operative imaging, strategic surgical planning, and coordinated multidisciplinary management prior to entering the operating theatre.

Another critical challenge during the procedure was managing the patient's cardiovascular stability. Large adrenal masses are known to trigger extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, which required continuous and precise anaesthetic management to ensure the patient remained stable throughout the operation.
