Master Plan for Delhi 2047 Proposes Active Travel Areas for Chandni Chowk

The Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) 2047 has laid out a framework to develop active travel areas and active travel networks across high-footfall parts of the capital, including Chandni Chowk, to boost non-motorised mobility and support a 24x7 economy.
Active travel areas are designated urban zones or corridors prioritised for pedestrians and cyclists. The plan aims to provide affordable, comfortable, and safe mobility options while easing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and improving public health.
According to officials, the framework targets areas characterised by intense commercial activity, heritage precincts, and locations identified for nightlife and extended business hours. Agencies have been encouraged to identify and construct pedestrian corridors that connect metro stations to surrounding streets for a smoother and safer transit experience.
Officials noted that heritage hubs such as Chandni Chowk, Hauz Khas Village, and Adhchini see substantial pedestrian footfall. Developing dedicated pedestrian corridors and improving integration with public transport is intended to provide safer streets and support local restaurants, businesses, and cultural activities.
