Delhi University Suspends Law PhD Scholar for Assaulting Faculty Member at Umang Bhawan

Delhi University has suspended a PhD scholar from its Faculty of Law and barred him from entering the university campus after he allegedly assaulted a faculty member on Monday morning at Umang Bhawan.

According to a notice issued by the university proctor's office, the incident occurred around 10:30 am outside the Law Centre building at Umang Bhawan. The university has banned the student's entry into the premises with immediate effect, though officials have not specified the total duration of the suspension.

The disciplinary action was taken after the proctor's office reviewed footage of the incident. The scholar, identified as a second-year PhD student admitted during phase-II of the 2024-25 academic session, allegedly slapped the teacher as the faculty member was entering the building, causing the teacher to fall to the ground.

The footage showed that several bystanders and security personnel quickly gathered and intervened to de-escalate the situation. The video also recorded the student engaging in a heated argument with the faculty member and making repeated attempts to attack him. The exact cause behind the altercation was not immediately known.

The formal notice stated that the ban on the scholar's entry into the university premises was enacted under Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922.

DU Proctor Manoj Kumar stated that a proctorial inquiry would be formally constituted to investigate the matter thoroughly. Kumar added that further disciplinary action would be determined based on the findings of the inquiry, which could ultimately lead to the termination of the student's admission.
