275 kg Teen Undergoes Weight-Loss Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi

A 16-year-old boy weighing nearly 275 kg has undergone a high-risk laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after suffering from severe respiratory complications, obstructive sleep apnoea, and extensive skin infections.
The teenager, who travelled from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, had a body mass index close to 100. His condition had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer fit into a conventional car and had to be transported to the hospital in a Matador.
Upon admission, the patient required nearly two weeks of treatment in the paediatric intensive care unit to manage respiratory and other health complications. A multidisciplinary panel of nearly 20 specialists across critical care, bariatric surgery, gastroenterology, cardiology, and anaesthesia evaluated his condition. The team assessed the significant surgical and respiratory risks before concluding that bariatric surgery was the most viable intervention.
The surgical procedure was carried out by Dr Daksh Sethi, Dr Sudhir Kalhan, Dr Mukund Khetan, and Dr Suviraj John from the hospital's Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.
Dr Sethi, who served as the lead bariatric surgeon, noted the complexity of the operation, stating that the patient's age, extreme weight, and severe sleep apnoea required careful planning at every stage of the procedure.
Following the successful laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the teenager showed a positive recovery and was discharged from the hospital three days after the operation.
