Delhi Doctors Treat Heart Ailments and Kidney Cancer in Single Hospital Stay

Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital in New Delhi have successfully treated a 64-year-old man suffering from a torn aorta, a severely leaking aortic valve, and kidney cancer during a single hospital stay. The medical team has claimed the combined management of these three life-threatening conditions is a first in the world, based on available medical literature.
The patient initially approached doctors after experiencing severe breathlessness and extreme fatigue during routine daily activities. Medical scans revealed that he had a dangerous tear and swelling in his aorta—the body's main artery—along with a severe leak in his aortic valve.
During a subsequent CT scan arranged to assess the aorta, doctors made an unexpected discovery: a cricket-ball-sized cancerous tumour located in the patient's left kidney.
Medical experts determined that the kidney tumour was localized and had not spread elsewhere in the body. This critical factor allowed a multidisciplinary medical team to plan the treatment of all three potentially fatal conditions in one go.
Dr Pankaj Panwar, additional director of urology at Fortis Escorts Hospital, confirmed that the localized nature of the cancer made the combined intervention possible.
To address the life-threatening conditions, the medical team first performed a complex open-heart surgical procedure to replace the damaged valve and repair the torn aorta before addressing the tumour.
