Delhi Traffic Police To Study MG Road And 24 Other Stretches For Signal-Free Flow

Delhi Traffic Police has decided to conduct feasibility studies across 25 additional arterial roads, including Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, to explore replacing regular signal-controlled intersections with U-turns and engineering solutions to create signal-free corridors.
The initiative aims to reduce travel times, curb vehicular congestion, and cut down fuel consumption and emissions across key routes connecting Delhi with the National Capital Region. The traffic police are already working on signal-free interventions across seven major stretches and have now expanded the scope to examine 25 more corridors.
The proposal originated from the Guru Hanuman Society of India, an NGO led by General Secretary Atul Ranjit, who submitted a letter to Delhi Traffic Police in mid-June. The organisation suggested that a U-turn-based traffic management model would keep carriageways moving longer and prevent long queues at intersections where cross-traffic is minimal.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manish Kumar Agarwal stated that the department is dedicated to enhancing traffic mobility by implementing practical engineering solutions within existing road infrastructure. Officials noted that rather than simply turning off traffic signals, teams will evaluate each intersection to determine whether techniques such as channelisation and U-turns can be integrated without compromising road safety.
Along with Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, the 25 identified corridors include key southern and western links such as Mathura Road from Ashram to the Badarpur border, Najafgarh Road between Uttam Nagar and Dwarka Mor as well as Rajouri Garden Flyover to Moti Nagar, and Captain Gaur Marg. Twelve intersections in Dwarka have also been marked for assessment.
Other major stretches on the list include the Outer Ring Road covering Okhla, Nehru Place, Chirag Delhi Flyover, IIT Flyover, Hauz Khas, Munirka, RK Puram, and Rao Tula Ram Flyover; Rohtak Road from Punjabi Bagh to the Tikri-Bahadurgarh border; Patel Road from Karampura Flyover to Rajiv Chowk; Maharaja Nahar Singh Marg; Badli-Bawana Road; UER-I from NH-44 towards Narela and Bawana; Ring Road from Mall Road to Civil Lines; and the Red Fort Circuit.
