Delhi High Court Denies Bail to Man Accused of Dismembering Wife

The Delhi High Court has dismissed the bail application of a man accused of murdering his wife, dismembering her body, and dumping the remains into a septic tank, observing that the gruesome nature of the alleged offense could not be ignored.
Justice Girish Kathpalia, while dismissing the bail plea on August 20, observed that although a delay in the trial could be considered, it was not the only factor determining whether bail should be granted. The court stated that it could not overlook the brutal manner in which the woman was killed, chopped into pieces, and thrown into a septic tank.
According to the prosecution, the case was registered in 2019 after the accused went to a police station and confessed to killing his wife, dismembering her body, and disposing of the remains inside a septic tank.
During his interrogation, the police received a PCR call from the victim's brother, who alleged that she had been murdered and that her body had been found in the septic tank. A formal FIR was subsequently registered by the police.
The victim's brother further alleged that the accused and his family had subjected the woman to cruelty and demanded dowry because she had given birth to three daughters.
In his plea seeking bail, the accused argued that there were material contradictions in the testimonies given by the victim's mother and brother. His counsel also submitted that the trial was progressing slowly, which entitled him to relief.
The prosecution opposed the bail petition, arguing that the proceedings were not being unduly delayed and that the severity of the allegations weighed heavily against granting bail. The prosecution also highlighted the recovery of a blood-stained weapon, along with the victim's clothes and jewellery, which had been sent for forensic examination.
Taking into account the overall circumstances and the serious nature of the allegations, the High Court held that the matter was not a fit case for bail and rejected the plea.
