Delhi Fire Service to conduct surprise inspections at fire stations across New Delhi

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) announced on Saturday that it will conduct surprise inspections of fire stations across New Delhi to evaluate emergency response times and operational readiness. The decision follows an official order issued on Friday, aimed at addressing safety concerns after multiple fatal fires occurred in the city earlier this year.

Under the new directive, senior officers have been tasked with evaluating the overall operations, discipline, and emergency capabilities of various stations. The inspections will focus heavily on the department's preparedness and response times, which have drawn public concern following recent fatal incidents.

A key element of the surprise inspections will be the execution of a mandatory 60-second turnout (TOT) drill. This drill measures the exact time taken by firefighters to mobilise and leave the station after receiving an emergency call, as prescribed under the department’s standard operating procedures.

In addition to response drills, inspecting officers will examine the readiness of firefighting and rescue equipment, communication systems, and the availability and serviceability of protective gear. Staff attendance, general alertness, and overall discipline will also be closely monitored.

The scope of the inspections extends to the physical upkeep of the stations. Officers are directed to review the cleanliness and maintenance of the premises, the upkeep of official records, and strict compliance with departmental safety procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The order has made participation in this exercise compulsory for all designated officers, including those called away on emergency duties and those who are scheduled for their weekly off on the day of the inspection.

Senior officers conducting the surprise visits are required to submit their preliminary findings first, which will be followed by a comprehensive detailed report. Through this exercise, the DFS aims to strengthen its operational efficiency and ensure that all fire stations remain fully equipped for emergencies.
