Delhi Govt Moves to Fill Vacant EWS Seats in Private Schools From Class II
The Delhi government has initiated the formal process to fill vacant Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and freeship seats in Class II and above across private unaided recognised schools operating on government or Delhi Development Authority (DDA) allotted land for the 2026-27 academic session.
The Directorate of Education (DoE) has set a deadline of September 3 for school administrations to verify vacancy figures compiled by the department, according to a circular issued by the DoE's private school branch on August 31.
Under this exercise, a tentative list of vacancies has been prepared specifically for eligible schools functioning on land allotted by the DDA or other government agencies. Minority schools have been excluded from the drive.
The Directorate instructed schools to thoroughly recheck the compiled numbers of EWS and freeship vacancies. In the event of any discrepancy, school managements have been permitted to submit a written representation to their concerned zonal authority by September 3.
These representations will be examined at the zonal level. Following the review, proposals recommended by district authorities are required to be submitted by September 5. The department stated that if no representation is received from an institution within the specified time, the vacancy data already compiled by the DoE will be presumed to be correct.
Once the vacancy lists are finalized, candidates will be allotted seats across participating schools through a computerised draw of lots.
The Directorate also issued a clear directive regarding admissions post-allotment. Once seats are allocated based on the declared vacancies, schools will not be permitted to deny admission to successful candidates on the ground that no vacancy exists.
The circular cautioned that appropriate action may be initiated against schools that refuse admission on such grounds under the relevant provisions of the Delhi School Education Act and Rules and the Right to Education Act, 2009.
