31-Year-Old MSc Student Dies by Suicide at IIT Delhi Campus

A 31-year-old Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi student pursuing an MSc in Physics allegedly died by suicide on Saturday morning after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the IIT Delhi campus in southwest Delhi, police said.
The incident took place at the institute's Lecture Hall Complex (LHC). Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said that the police control room received a call regarding a student jumping from a building at the campus at around 8:33 am.
A police team reached the spot and shifted the student to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
According to the initial police probe, the student entered the campus through the main gate around 8 am. He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift up to the sixth floor, and allegedly jumped from the front side of the structure.
Police said that no suicide note was recovered from the student's possession or from the site of the incident. Officers recovered a mobile phone from the student's trousers, which will be examined as part of standard procedure.
Investigators are currently examining counselling records and gathering other relevant details from the institute to ascertain the reason behind the incident. DCP Goel stated that no apparent injury marks were found on the body other than those resulting from the fall.
In an official statement, IIT Delhi expressed grief over the incident, stating that the institute deeply mourns the tragic and untimely demise of the student. The administration added that it is providing support to the bereaved family while the Delhi Police continue their investigation.
This incident is the second alleged suicide on the IIT Delhi campus since March, when a 19-year-old first-year B.Tech student died inside his room on campus.
