15-Year-Old Boy Swept Away in Open Drain in Jasola, Rescue Search Continues

A 15-year-old boy was swept away after falling into an open drain in Delhi's Jasola on Saturday morning, triggering a multi-agency search operation involving the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Boat Club.

The teenager, identified as Mithun, fell into the uncovered drain around 11:00 am on Saturday while chasing a kite. According to the Delhi Fire Service, information regarding the accident was received at 11:54 am, following which two fire tenders were rushed to the location to launch a search operation.

Teams from the East Delhi district administration, the Boat Club, and NDRF personnel joined the operation to comb the drain and surrounding waterways. However, rescue workers faced major difficulties as the continuous, heavy flow of water in the drain severely hindered search efforts throughout the weekend.

For Mithun's family, the incident has brought immense grief and uncertainty. The family originally hails from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh and had relocated to Delhi in search of work. Mithun is the youngest of four siblings, with one sister and two brothers.

His father, Awadhesh Kumar, said the teenager fell into the open drain and could not be traced despite the deployment of divers and disaster response teams. He noted that the drain was left completely open when the incident occurred.

The boy's aunt, Kusum, raised concerns over the rescue response, stating that earlier intervention by the police might have saved him after officials visited the accident site twice without managing to retrieve him.

The NDRF resumed search operations on Sunday to scour the Jasola drain and connected stretches, but rescue personnel had not located the boy or recovered his body.
