Twisha Sharma Died by Suicide, AIIMS Medical Board Report Concludes

A medical board at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has concluded that Twisha Sharma died by suicidal hanging, finding no signs of physical assault or struggle on her body.

The findings were submitted in an 11-page report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a sealed cover, following an order from the Madhya Pradesh High Court directing a second postmortem examination.

Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of the department of forensic medicine at AIIMS, confirmed the board's findings. "It is a clear case of suicide and there are no injuries of medico-legal importance suggestive of any physical assault, resistance or struggle on the body of the deceased, Twisha, prior to death," Dr Gupta stated.

The five-member medical team examined the circumstances of Sharma's death from both suicide and murder angles. Forensic experts evaluated all aspects of the case, including the disputed ligature material allegedly used in the incident, which included a gymnastics belt fitted with a metal ring.

According to Dr Gupta, the medical board resolved the dispute concerning the ligature material after reviewing the physical evidence alongside national and international scientific literature.

The second postmortem examination was conducted on May 24 by AIIMS experts following the High Court directive. In addition to the postmortem examination, the members of the board also visited the crime scene to inspect the surroundings and gather relevant context for their medical assessment.
