Police Stop Farmers' Padyatra to Delhi at Haryana Border in Jind

A group of 51 farmers marching towards Jantar Mantar in Delhi was stopped by the Haryana Police at the Khanauri-Data Singhwala border in Jind on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the group was undertaking a 13-day 'Kisan Bachao Padyatra' on foot.
Several farmer leaders from Haryana were taken into preventive detention as security forces sealed the border stretch with reinforced concrete barricades and barbed wire.
Accompanied by approximately 150 supporters, the farmers were scheduled to reach Jantar Mantar on August 29, 2026. Their demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), a complete waiver of farm loans, the withdrawal of police cases registered during earlier agitations, and the exclusion of agriculture from the proposed India-U.S. trade agreement.
Mr. Dallewal stated that the march was proceeding peacefully on foot without tractors or trolleys, recalling earlier government assurances that pedestrian marches would be permitted. He noted that the group sought permission to assemble at Jantar Mantar within permissible crowd limits.
Heavy police deployment, including water cannons and riot-control vehicles, was stationed near the Narwana canal bridge and adjoining border points. Traffic advisories were issued diverting vehicular movement between Punjab and Haryana through nearby village routes.
Jind Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh said prohibitory orders remained in force across the district and confirmed that no competent authority had permitted the march.
Following the stoppage, the protesting farmers launched a sit-in at the border site. Mr. Dallewal said the farmers would seek judicial intervention from the High Court and Supreme Court to reopen the route, adding that resolving the matter required talks with the Union Agriculture Minister or an empowered central representative rather than state-level talks.
