One Dead, Several Trapped After Building Collapses in Rohini Sector 16

On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, a three-storey under-construction building collapsed near an MCD school in Sector 16, Rohini, leaving one person dead and five to six others feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. as heavy rain lashed several parts of the national capital.

Following the collapse, emergency agencies including the police, the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) launched a massive rescue operation at the site. Local residents also joined the efforts, forming human chains to shift debris and bringing shovels and other tools from nearby houses and construction sites to help clear the rubble.

Two people were successfully pulled out alive from the debris earlier in the operation. Rescuers continued searching for the remaining individuals believed to be trapped beneath the heavy concrete. A senior police officer told PTI that one person had died due to the collapse and that rescue operations remained under way to reach those still trapped.

Several videos of the rescue operation surfaced on social media, capturing the tense atmosphere at the Rohini site. One video released by the DFS showed rescuers using hydraulic cutters and specialised equipment to carefully remove heavy concrete slabs without causing further harm to those trapped underneath.

In the video, a firefighter could be seen laying flat on the rubble, peering through a narrow opening in an attempt to locate a trapped person. A hand could be seen emerging from beneath the debris, apparently signalling for help.

To reassure the trapped individual, the firefighter was heard saying, "Aap chinta mat kariye, aapko bacha lenge sir" (Do not worry, we will rescue you). The firefighter repeatedly asked colleagues to bring a torch to better assess the victim's condition through the small gap.

Although the collapse occurred during heavy monsoon rains in Delhi, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the weather contributed to the incident.
