New Tikri Khurd Prison in Narela Set for Completion by November 2027

The new high-security prison complex at Tikri Khurd in Narela is scheduled for completion by November 4, 2027, according to project officials. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently laid the foundation stone for the 40-acre facility, which is designed to house 250 to 300 high-risk inmates in individual cells under round-the-clock surveillance to enhance security and reduce threat levels.

Once operational, the modern correctional facility is expected to significantly ease the overcrowding and burden on Delhi's existing prisons, including Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini jails. The project is being developed in two phases, with the first phase covering 18 acres of core prison infrastructure, and the remaining 22 acres reserved for future expansion.

The first phase of the complex will feature a total built-up area of nearly 19,971 square metres. The largest component of this phase will be the inmate housing blocks, which consist of four ground-plus-one-storey blocks covering a plinth area of 10,598 square metres.

In addition to the residential blocks, the Tikri Khurd facility will include an administration block spanning 3,873 square metres, a control room and dispensary covering 2,317 square metres, and a langar-cum-mess of 1,780 square metres to serve inmates and staff.

To ensure high-level security, the facility has been designed with strict access control and constant monitoring systems. The security infrastructure includes eight watchtowers spread over 900 square metres, an electrical substation, a guard room, and an underground sump pump house.

Preparations for the construction are already underway at the site. Officials confirmed that a Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plant and a reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plant have already been installed to ensure uninterrupted progress during the execution of the project.

The central government has approved a ₹100 crore fund for the construction of the Narela prison. Out of this sanctioned amount, the Centre released ₹10 crore on February 1, 2024. Project officials noted that if the total cost of construction exceeds the approved ₹100 crore, the Delhi government will cover the additional expenses.
