NDMC Prepares Connaught Place and 40 Key Roads for BRICS Summit on Sept 12-13
New Delhi Municipal Council has launched an extensive beautification and civic upgrade drive across key stretches including Connaught Place ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13 in New Delhi. The civic body's preparedness plan covers 41 major roads divided into 14 circles, aimed at maintaining international standards of urban management while welcoming foreign delegates.
Ten hotels in Lutyens' Delhi have been set to host delegates during the summit, including the Taj Hotel, Maurya Sheraton, Le Meridien, Claridges Hotel, Ashoka Hotel, Samrat Hotel, Leela Hotel, Janpath Hotel, Shangri-La and Taj Maan Singh Hotel. In addition to Connaught Place, the 41 identified road stretches include Raisina Road, Sansad Marg, Rafi Marg, Ashoka Road, Janpath, Shanti Path, SP Marg, Teen Murti Marg, Africa Avenue, Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Marg, Lodhi Road and Prithviraj Road.
"The preparedness plan is aimed at ensuring efficient planning, coordinated execution, uninterrupted civic services and international standards of urban management throughout the Summit period," NDMC Chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said. He noted that all departments have been directed to work in close coordination, adding: "For enhanced visual appeal, 15 locations have been identified for floral boards, nine locations for flower fountains and 17 roundabouts for special beautification and landscaping." In total, 23 flower fountains will be installed across the nine sites, accompanied by seasonal flowers, pruning of shrubs, decorative planters and greening of brown patches.
To maintain round-the-clock cleanliness, additional sanitation staff and special night-duty teams will be deployed from September 9 to 14. NDMC will utilise Mechanical Road Sweepers, Gobblers, Push Back Manual Sweepers, Ride-on Sweepers and Ride-on Scrubbers for intensive road cleaning. Temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be installed where necessary, while stray animals will be removed from designated areas. Civic teams will also repair potholes, fix damaged footpaths, maintain storm-water drains, clear dry leaves and inspect public toilets.
Electrical works and decorative lighting across identified roundabouts and streetlights must be completed five days before the summit. Backup power arrangements and Quick Response Teams will remain on standby to address electrical faults. In addition, BRICS branding will be featured on 154 digital screens and around 83 PTUs and CTUs, complemented by promotional material at major roundabouts. Special enforcement drives will also monitor street vending, construction activity, unauthorised hoardings and encroachments along VIP routes.
Preventive health and traffic measures will be put in place two days before the event, including inspections of food establishments, mosquito-control drives, and deployed medical teams and ambulances. Dedicated civic arrangements have also been made for related events, including the BRICS Bazaar, BRICS Run & Ride, BRICS Murals & Painting, and BRICS Food Festival. A 24x7 Command and Control Centre will monitor services via CCTV and field reports starting one day before the summit through to its conclusion.
