Delhi to Revamp Yamuna Riverfront on Sabarmati Model with Parks and Cycle Tracks

The Delhi government is set to develop the Yamuna riverfront along the lines of Gujarat's Sabarmati Riverfront, introducing large parks, cycle tracks, and sports facilities along the stretch, including plans for a major Chhath Ghat at Kalindi Kunj, water minister Parvesh Verma announced on Monday.
Verma shared the development plan during a study visit to Gujarat, where he reviewed the Sabarmati Riverfront project alongside senior officials from the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department and the Delhi Jal Board.
According to the minister, the challenges currently seen along the Yamuna in the capital mirror those faced by the Sabarmati River two to three decades ago. He noted that the administration is working on revamping the Yamuna riverfront by drawing direct lessons from the transformation of the Sabarmati.
The government is closely examining the Sabarmati framework to identify key strategies and best practices that can be tailored to local requirements. Verma stated that adapting these measures would help create a clean, green, and world-class riverfront along the Yamuna.
The planned riverfront development blueprint includes sports grounds, dedicated cycling tracks, and extensive public parks along the riverbanks. Alongside the riverfront beautification, several administrative initiatives are underway to tackle pollution levels in the Yamuna.
These anti-pollution efforts include an active Delhi Jal Board project aimed at bridging the sewage treatment gap, as well as a separate initiative focused on managing and treating dairy waste that enters the river.
The government is also evaluating potential modifications to existing dhobi ghats along the river. Verma noted that the Sabarmati project had resolved similar pollution concerns by relocating dhobi ghats and setting up mechanized laundry systems.
Additionally, the government is planning to construct a dedicated Chhath Ghat at Kalindi Kunj at an estimated cost of ₹60 crore. A special committee has also been tasked with reviewing Comptroller and Auditor General reports concerning the Delhi Jal Board to determine further administrative action.
