Anurag Kumar Appointed as New Delhi Police Commissioner

On Friday, Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, was appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, returning to lead his parent cadre after serving for more than 20 years in the Intelligence Bureau. Kumar, who previously served as the Additional DCP in Northeast Delhi, takes charge of the city's police force with five years of service remaining before his retirement.

Kumar's appointment marks a homecoming to the Delhi Police, which he first joined in September 1994. During his early career, he served in various capacities, including as Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police. In 2005, while serving as DCP (North), he drew praise from senior officers for overseeing the security arrangements at the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebrations. Prior to that role, he was stationed in Northeast Delhi.

In 2005, Kumar was deputed to the Intelligence Bureau, where he remained for over two decades and was associated with several national and international operations. During his tenure there, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016. Before his current posting, he was stationed at the Delhi Headquarters, where he looked after Jammu and Kashmir affairs.

Officers who previously worked alongside Kumar recalled him as a highly professional officer with strong operational policing skills and sound strategic planning. Colleagues expressed expectations that the force will become more professional under his leadership, noting his reputation for honesty and integrity.

A native of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Kumar holds a B Tech degree, and his father was a judge of the Allahabad High Court. He is scheduled to hold a key meeting with police officers on Saturday.

At the Delhi Police Headquarters, Kumar will work alongside three of his 1994-batch classmates—Rajesh Khurana, Garima Bhatnagar, and Neeraj Thakur—who currently serve as Special Commissioners of Police. Robin Hibu, a 1993-batch officer, also serves at the headquarters as the Special Commissioner of Police for Human Resources.

Meanwhile, the outgoing police chief, Satish Golchha, reported to the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat on Friday following his removal. Sources indicated that Golchha is likely to await his next posting until the Ministry of Home Affairs issues further orders.
