Two Minor Boys Drown in Rainwater-Filled Pit in Delhi's Narela
Two minor boys aged nine and 11 drowned in a rainwater-filled pit near the DDA Flats in Delhi’s Narela area on Thursday, according to the police.
The victims, both residents of nearby Bawana, had entered the pit to play and swim near the 100 Foota road when the drowning occurred. Following a distress call, police personnel rushed to the scene, pulled the two children out of the water, and transported them to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela. Doctors at the facility declared both boys dead on arrival.
Police stated that the bodies of the children were sent for medico-legal proceedings and that formal legal action has been initiated. Investigators are currently ascertaining the exact sequence of events and the circumstances that led the boys to enter the pit.
The tragedy took place amid heavy monsoon activity across the national capital, which has caused widespread waterlogging and the accumulation of rainwater in several parts of the city.
Following the incident, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) expressed regret over the deaths and stated that the incident happened on vacant land adjoining Housing Pocket-4 in Sector G7/G8 in Narela.
The DDA explained that the vacant plot had been secured with a boundary wall designed to prevent unauthorised access. However, officials stated that sections of the wall had been repeatedly damaged over time despite ongoing repairs.
The agency noted that incidents involving damage, theft, and unauthorised activities across the area had been consistently reported to local police through complaints, FIRs, and other communications. The DDA also stated that it had repeatedly raised security and law-and-order concerns regarding Sector G7/G8 with the Delhi Police.
To address safety concerns in the locality, the DDA said it had already allotted a flat in Pocket-4 to serve as a police chowki and had offered two additional Low Income Group (LIG) flats to set up a police camp office.
The DDA added that it is cooperating with police and relevant authorities while reviewing preventive measures. These measures include repairing and strengthening the boundary wall and stepping up surveillance around vulnerable vacant plots in the area as the investigation continues.
