Satya Niketan PG Building Collapse Leaves Up to 50 Trapped in South Delhi
A five-storey boys' paying guest accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan near Delhi University's South Campus on Sunday afternoon, leaving an estimated 40 to 50 students feared trapped under the debris. Emergency personnel were alerted after the South Campus Police Station received a PCR call regarding the collapse at approximately 1:34 pm.
Rescue workers have pulled around six to seven students from the rubble and transported them to nearby medical facilities. Three of the injured students admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre are in critical condition, hospital officials reported as search efforts continued at the site.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that rescue teams are conducting operations on a war footing. Personnel from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centralised Trauma Services, and Civil Defence have all been mobilised to clear the rubble and extricate survivors.
According to local residents and an eyewitness, the collapsed structure was a dedicated boys' PG facility known as "Hostel Daze." A police officer at the site, citing a preliminary inquiry, confirmed that between 40 and 50 students were suspected to have been inside the building when it gave way.
The incident prompted sharp political scrutiny over student safety and civic enforcement in the capital. Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke questioned the condition of educational infrastructure in Delhi, asking how students could be left at risk in unsafe accommodation. Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj alleged widespread corruption within the MCD building department and compared the incident to the earlier Saket building collapse.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the collapse heartbreaking and alarming, calling on rescue teams to ensure that injured victims receive immediate medical treatment. Gandhi and party spokespersons noted that an acute shortage of campus hostels forces students to live under cramped conditions in private accommodations, while members of the National Students' Union of India joined volunteer assistance efforts at the site.
